From a successful career in electronics, hydraulics and automation, Henry Burden,
instrumental in the development of the stacking record player, started Burden Electronics
over 50 years.
Initially specialising in the rental, servicing and repair of TV sets, Henry Burden’s
popularity amongst his customers & the growing demand this created, convinced him
to take over workshop premises at the rear of the what eventually became our shop
on County Road.
In 1974, due to the increasing demand for colour television sets, & Henry’s excellent
service, he was joined by his son Randolph.
Soon after Randolph joined, Burden Electronics entered a new era and expanded from
its workshop base into a new retail showroom that would occupy the shop to the front
of the existing service department.
Opened on the 20th December 1976, the shop, built on Henry’s insistence on product
knowledge & service, boasted a complete range of TV sets, radios, record players,
cassette decks, music centres & smaller items including irons, hairdryers, headphones
From this date Burdens Electronics has moved from strength to strength and continues
to offer an unrivalled service in Swindon for TV and Home Entertainment equipment.
As a family run business it was almost inevitable the Randolph’s wife, Rosalyn also
became involved and moved Burdens in another complimentary direction.
After moving the service department to more suitable premises, Rosalyn & Randolph
expanded the shop and added an entirely new domestic appliance showroom. Once again
focusing on well known, high quality brand names with customer service to match.
As part of the expansion in to domestic appliances, Burdens became an early member
of Combined Independents (Holdings) group. This gave us the ability to compete on
price with the big players on the High St & more recently On-Line. As part of CI(H),
we are now also an agent for Euronics & are able to offer many items that you won’t
find in the national chains.
